Speyer Spoons

I started carving spoons and other objects around 2012, having been taught by Sharif Adams (an accomplish local woodsmith). If I can I like to go to an annual spoon carving festival, Spoonfest, which is held in Edale, usually in August. Being a member of the Sticklepath and Okehampton Conservation Group, I have a lot of opportunity to ‘gather’ green wood. Most spoon carvers will work with green, that is fresh cut, wood as it is easier to carve.
There are as many styles (shapes) of spoons as there are carvers, although some folk will make spoons to a definite pattern or template. The spoons I create are generally one off’s, I do use templates some of the time but mostly I like to follow the woods grain and see what develops. It is a deeply satisfying pastime/hobby as the process cannot really be rushed, which makes sense as I use extremely sharp axes and knives.
