Wallen Down Farm

I am a farmer, cider maker and blacksmith, and live and work just outside Chagford on the way
to Throwleigh, where we’ve been for nearly 30 years.

In my making I forge broken, rusted, twisted metal reclaimed from my farm and others and try to
make interesting, characterful small pieces that hopefully intrigue and delight. I try to forge in the
Winter, when it is cold and wet and routine livestock work dominates. The Summer and Autumn
is a time for hay and cider making.

All items are hand forged. I have no power hammers or machinery. The pieces range from
jewellery, such as bangles, pendants and earrings. Table furniture such as candle sticks, tea light
holders, bottle openers through to hand forged hooks. I can make larger pieces such as weather
vanes. I also make small knives from reclaimed circular saw blades, or tool steel and fashion the
handles from timber I cut on the farm as I harvest fire wood.
